At age 36, Thomson Beattie, a native son of Fergus, had it all. The youngest son of a prominent and influential family, he was one of the bright young men who headed west to make his fortune in real estate. A member of the millionaire elite in Winnipeg, he was one of the few who could actually afford a European vacation with friends.
And on the return trip home, he wrote family in Fergus to announce his fortunate change in plans: a first class ticket on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. Beattie’s fate is now part of Titanic lore.
Join Susan Dunlop, curator of the Wellington County Museum and Archives, as she shares his story in a power-point presentation this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Kiwanis Community Centre in Stratford.
The event is being presented by the Perth County Historical Foundation. Admission is by donation.
