    Saturday November 10, 2012 - 10:00 am — Durham Curling Club - Durham
In 1949, the London Free Press reported on the presentation of the King’s Medal to a local hero, Dutch immigrant Albert Jan Koeslag. Five thousand people converged on Durham in 1949 to witness the event. Now, on time for Remembrance Day, a Dutch journalist tours Ontario to tell their story, along with the story of their village and the Allied Forces who liberated it. Jan Braakman, author of The War in the Corner: Chronicle of a Village in Wartime Netherlands, stops over in Durham for a day, reading from his new book and talking about war, memories, and the personal connections built during his research with immigrants to Ontario and the families of Canadian soldiers. To attend the event, please contact Tim Dickert, 613-979-4448. The author will be available for interviews by cell phone while in Canada: 289-890-0212.

Mark your calendars - dates for the 11th Annual HopeSpring Holiday Tour of Homes (formerly the HO HO HO Tour For Hope) have been booked! The homes are professionally decorated by some of the best decorators and florists in the area, who donate their time, energy and skills to make this event one that sells out every year. Tickets will be available at HopeSpring, or visit www.hopespring.ca in late September to find a list of local retailers carrying tickets. "It's a great way to get into the holiday spirit, get decorating and gift ideas, and support a worthwhile cause all at the same time.  We have people coming back, who have attended the tour every year since it started.  There are some who make a big event out of the evening, renting a limo and sharing it with a group of friends. It's great to see people having such a wonderful time all while knowing we're making a difference to our community", shared Marnie Magna, co-chair of the event. All proceeds from the tour benefit HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre. Since 1995, people with cancer and their caregivers in Waterloo Region and the surrounding area have found inspiration, information, and empowerment at HopeSpring. HopeSpring's programs and services are confidential and free of charge. HopeSpring is a local not-for-profit organization funded entirely by community donations, without grants or support from the government or larger cancer-based organizations. HopeSpring offers one-on-one and group peer support, free wigs and head coverings, gentle exercise programs, relaxation therapies such as reiki, therapeutic touch and reflexology.  HopeSpring’s programs and workshops are designed to reduce stress & anxiety while promoting wellness and empowering those dealing with cancer.
