The Wellesley Applejacks played three games in the span of less than 72 hours this past weekend and came away with six points —and the games weren’t even that close.
The Applejacks opened the weekend on home ice against the Burford Bulldogs, Friday, with a convincing 8-2 victory. That was followed by a home-and-home series with the Norfolk Rebels, which Wellesley swept by scores of 8-1 and 7-4.
The wins have pushed the Applejacks record to 9-7-1 in Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League play.
Troy Williams and Taylor Doering both scored twice in Friday’s victory over the Bulldogs, as Wellesley jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the mid-way point of the second period and never looked back.
Cody Tapsell added a goal and two assists; Luke Rose and Tyler Eckert both scored and had an assist; and Shawn Fitzpatrick also scored. Corey Way (3), Connor McLeod (2), Coleton Madge, Reid Denstedt, Steve Tait, Mark Detzler and Williams also had helpers.
Burford goal scorers were Kyle Chaney and Jim Salatas.
Wellesley’s Josh Heer made 47 saves for the win.
Saturday, Wellesley once again scored eight times in an 8-1 home-ice victory over Norfolk.
Tait led the offence with three goals and an assist, as the Applejacks broke open a 3-1 lead with five unanswered goals.
Rose added two goals and an assist; Way had a goal and three assists; and Devon Wagner scored twice. Williams (3), Josh Herd (2), Madge (2), Eckert, Tapsell, Fitzpatrick also had helpers.
Scoring for the Rebels was Joshua Slegers.
Wellesley netminder Trevor Olender made 12 saves for the win.
Sunday in Norfolk, Wellesley led 3-2 heading into the third period and struck for three goals in the period’s first seven minutes to take a commanding lead en route to an 7-4 victory.
Tait and Doering both had a pair of goals; Way scored and had two assists; and Denstedt, and Rose also scored. Williams (3), Jake Steenson (2), Herd (2), Wagner, and Fitzpatrick had assists.
Scoring for Norfolk were Nate Parker, Chris Murray, Kenny Britton and Slegers.
Olender stopped 33 of 37 shots.
Wellesley has a pair of games on tap for this weekend: Saturday at Norfolk and Sunday at Burford. The Applejacks are back on home ice the following weekend.
