The Elmira Sugar Kings have kicked off 2013 on a winning note.

Elmira picked up a pair of wins on the first weekend back after the holiday layoff, including a victory over the Midwest Conference leaders.

The Sugar Kings outscored Caledonia 8-6 on home ice Sunday, to move within three points of the first-place squad. The teams combined for 12 power-play goals in the penalty-filled contest.

Elmira squandered an early 4-1 lead in the second period, after Caledonia struck for three goals in the span of 2:23. But the Sugar Kings rallied to take a 5-4 lead after two periods of play, then scored three times in the third to seal the victory.

Craig Johnson and Brandon Stewart both scored twice and added an assist for Elmira, while Brady Campbell had three helpers. Jake Weidner, Zac Coulter and Patrick McKelvie chipped in with a goal and an assist each. Steven Jakiela rounded out the scoring, and Mitch Wright, Cash Seraphim, Rob Kohli and Adam Brubacher added assists.

Scoring for the Corvairs were Connor Murphy (2), Tyler Norrie, Adam Brady, Jeff Swift and Marc Silvestri.

Elmira goaltender Hayden Neuman made 43 saves.

Saturday, Elmira got the New Year off on the right foot with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Waterloo Siskins.

The Sugar Kings had trailed 2-0 after two periods of play, but rallied to tie the game in the third on goals by Mitch Wright (assisted by Matt Harding, Cass Frey) and Brady Campbell (Weidner, Stewart).

Stewart scored the game winner at 3:39 of overtime, with assists to McKelvie and Seraphim.

Waterloo goal scorers were Jimmy Soper and Jakub Jelen.

Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 33 of 35 shots in goal for Elmira.

The Sugar Kings (22-9-3) return to action this Friday at Listowel. They travel to Brampton on Saturday, then are back on home ice on Sunday to play Stratford. Game time is 2 p.m.
