The Wingham Legion Peewee Rep team squared off against West Grey for their first round of playoffs. The first game in Wingham on Jan. 10 went to West Grey 3-2. The first Wingham goal was scored by Colton Atkins and assisted by Hunter Hemeon. Atkins came back in the third period to net the second goal with the assist going to Brendan Gallaher.
Next, Wingham traveled to Durham for a Saturday afternoon game on Jan. 12. Wingham’s persistence paid off with a goal being scored in each period. Atkins dumped one in off a pass from Spencer Green. The second goal was scored after much digging around in front of the West Grey goalie. Simon Reidy scored from an assist by Garrhett Green. The final goal was put in by Atkins from Hemeon. This tied the series 1-1.
Wingham was in Durham on Jan. 15 for the third game. Durham was victorious with a 5-2 win to lead the series. Wingham goals were both scored by Atkins with assists from Green, Green, and Gallaher.
It was back to Wingham for the fourth and deciding game. This game was a real nail biter and Wingham wasn’t about to go down without a fight. West Grey scored two goals in the first period. Hemeon battled back to score the only goal in the second with passes from Jordan Pham and Atkins. Atkins, unassisted, was able to net a goal that would tie the score in the third. Two minutes later, West Grey scored to lead 3-2. With just 48 seconds remaining, Atkins netted the tying goal with assistance from Green and Pham. An overtime goal was scored 2:21 into the period by West Grey to decide the game and the series. There was awesome net minding by Wingham goalies Josiah Moores in the first three games and Garret Golley in the last game.
