Minor soccer Under-8 Greens kick to win, 5-3

The Walkerton Wightman Telecom Under-8 Green soccer team remains undefeated this season after pulling off a 5-3 win over Tara at home last Thursday.

Kaylee Rich opened the scoring early in the game to put Walkerton ahead 1-0. Tara evened the match a few minutes later and then pulled ahead 2-1, but Wightman goalie Dylan Cartwright was solid in net and kept the score close.

Walkerton centre Cole Saunders tied the game at 2-2 with a long shot from the Tara goalie’s right side. Victoria Holman, Alex Ernewein, and Alyssa Duff maintained the tie up until the half with their strong defensive skills.

Lucas Rowe put the game away for Walkerton in the second half with three markers in a row. He scored the go-ahead goal on a hard shot to the centre of the net, assisted by Ashton Cobean. Tara tied it up again after a scramble in front of Wightman goal tender Katrina Quanbury, but Rowe’s next two goals sealed the 5-3 win. Holman assisted on the first tally while Alex Brandt and Cobean earned helpers on the second.

The win comes on the heels of the green team’s 4-1 victory June 14 in Paisley. Rowe netted two in that game while Cartwright and Talon Foreman scored singles. Walkerton also tied Hanover at home June 7 with a 1-1 final, for a current season record of 2-0-2. Wightman’s next game is tomorrow (June 28) in Tara.

Under-8 Reds

The Walkerton Wightman U-8 Red Rockets travelled to Tara for their game on Thursday, June 21.

Tara Lime Green proved to be tough opponents and the game ended in Tara’s favour with a score of 1-0.   Walkerton had many chances to score but were shut out by the strong Tara defence, goalie and the goal posts.

Jacob Zettler, Connor Heaney, Claire Yates, Ethan Smith, and Damian Rheubotton all had shots on net but came up empty handed.

Walkerton defence Corey Lacey, Colleen Mulvey, and Ellie Biesenthal made it difficult for the Tara team to score. Cadyn Connor played well offensively and Marissa Smit made a well placed corner kick.

The netminders for the game were Damian Rheubotton and Ethan Smith who both made some spectacular saves.

On June 28, the Wightman U-8 Red Rockets take on Tara Orange in Walkerton at Lobies Park on the south field.

Walkerton took the lead in the first half on a penalty shot by Keenan Soers. Kincardine tied it up with a second-half penalty shot of their own, but with around 10 minutes left Dane Hachey scored the game winner on a breakaway.

The Walkerton boys played hard to hold the lead with many great defensive plays. Mac Cassidy played a great game in net and Zac Grandy took away a good scoring opportunity with a great slide tackle.

Walkerton Blue

Wightman Telecom Blue tied 2-2 at an away game in Teeswater on June 22. Both goals were scored by Braydon Grife assisted by nimble team mates Gavin Dosman and Cobi Johnson.

Walkerton’s defensive tag team of Graham Hutcheon and Kyle Fortune, and thrilling saves by our goalies Emily Holiday and Averi Haygood made it an intense game.

Under-16

The Castle/General Building Supplies Under 16 boys soccer team continued their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Hanover Grant’s Independent Grocer.

Walkerton demonstrated good ball movement, spreading the ball to the wings and then crossing the ball in, with midfielders Owen Johnson and Eric Watke leading the way. Goal scorers were Tyler Goetz from Travis Sweiger, Connor Charette from Alex Herbert, and Herbert with a strong individual drive after a nice feed from Sweiger. Matt Smit and Mark Wilken had strong games in fullback roles and Joe Vandenberg again played strong in net.
