Lady Schleprocks lose close 33-30 decision Thursday

The Lady Schleprocks went toe-to-toe with a strong East Elgin hoops team in minor basketball action Thursday night at DCVI.

An exciting contest went down to the wire before East Elgin emerged with a hard-fought 33-30 decision.

It was close throughout, with the visitors holding a slim 18-17 lead the halfway mark.

The Schleprocks were led by guard Abbey Thorup and Mia Valcke on the scoresheet. Nathalie Bettger, Becky Knarr, Olivia Galloway and Jessica Findlay-Robinson also contributed some key buckets.

Defensively, Hannah Kooy, Maia Moore and Savannah Clifford played strong games. Meanwhile, the Schleprocks’ younger players, including Erin O’Connor and Ava Bettger, contributed positive minutes.

For St. Marys, this was their final game against OBA competition. The girls will take to the road in the coming weeks for games against some Stratford elementary schools.

A battle with Holy Name and the boys travel team are also on the horizon.

Coach Tim O’Connor remains very impressed with the tenacity and work ethic of the Schleprocks team. The girls have an overall record of five wins and four losses.

They have been competitive in every game against OBA teams from around southwestern Ontario.
