Irish hang on to beat Stars 7-5

By Mac Christie, Times-Advocate Staff

LUCAN – The Lucan Irish jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the North Middlesex Stars Nov. 21 in Lucan, but had to hang on for a 7-5 victory.

Irish head coach Dan Mudge said it was a tale of two games.

“We built up a lead and then kind of let down and let them back into it,” he said. “It was a sloppy game, that’s for sure. Nothing to be proud of.”

Colin Hartwick opened the scoring for Lucan at the 6:46 mark and Mitch Smith scored less than two minutes later.

Dylan Symons made it 3-0 13 seconds later before Smith added two more to complete the hat trick.

Mack Graham cut the score to 5-1 before the end of the frame with a power play marker for the Stars.

Midway through the second period Keiron Cobban restored Lucan’s five-goal lead with a power play goal of his own, but North Middlesex got it back with three seconds remaining in the period as Graham added his second of the night.

The Stars cut the lead to 6-4 early in the third period as Zak McNaught scored twice for the visitors.

But just before the midway point of the period Wes Huston gave the Irish a three goal lead.

Although Tommy Prokes scored to make it 7-5 with just under six minutes to play, that was all the Stars would manage as the Irish hung on for the win.

Dylan Hoover made 43 saves for the Irish while Lucan peppered the North Middlesex net with 60 shots.

Mudge noted the Irish were missing some key players due to school commitments and the flu, adding only playing one game last week was a huge help.

However, he noted the upcoming schedule is light, which poses its own challenges.

“We’ve got to alter out practice plans,” he explained. “It’s tough keeping the guys into it when you have a light schedule light this.

“Hopefully the guys come to play.”

The 11-9-3 Irish are in fourth place in the Yeck Conference. They are next in action tonight (Nov. 28) at 7:45 p.m. in Lucan against the Mount Brydges Bulldogs.
