The Wingham Ironmen claimed two big wins on the weekend – 9-4 Friday evening on home ice against Hanover, and 9-3 Saturday against Mount Forest.
Friday night the Ironmen came out strong, racking up five goals in the first period before Hanover made it onto the scoreboard. After that it was back-and-forth, but Wingham’s lead was too much for the opposition.
First to score was Drew Gross – his first on the way to a hat trick – from Brett Brophy and Derek Elliott. Then Cole Pellett scored from Dylan Williams and Matt McCracken. Aaron Armstrong kept things going for the Ironmen with his first of two goals, Elliott and Gross getting assists. Then Gross scored his second, assisted by Armstrong and Brophy. Brayden Pellett made it 5-0 with Armstrong and Matt Baker getting assists. Hanover fought back and put two in the Wingham net – Alex Kuntz from Chris Hardie, and Jason Demetrius from Daniel Hnatko and Robbie Moe. But Wingham matched them with two more, Armstrong from Darren Kerr, and B. Pellett from Armstrong and Josh Stewart, to keep their five-goal lead.
After a scoreless second period, both teams scored twice more – Gross getting his hat trick, assisted by Armstrong, to start things off. Then Hanover’s Tanner Bastien scored from Justin Graham and Tyler Cunningham. Stewart replied for Wingham, assisted by Armstrong and Gross. Hanover scored the last goal of the night, Kuntz from Tyson Soers and Brad Pitt.
Saturday’s game in Mount Forest had a different rhythm but similar results.
Scoring went back and forth during the first two periods to make it 3-3, but Wingham blazed out in the third period to score six goals.
Mount Forest’s Dean Nixon scored from Ben Davis, then Wingham’s Elliott from Armstrong and Brophy, back to the Patriots for a goal by Luke Richardson from Doug Costanzo and Jon Aitken, then back to Wingham for a goal by C. Pellett from Justin Jacklin. Mount Forest’s Matt Marshall scored unassisted, and Wingham’s Elliott closed out scoring in period with his second of the night, assists going to Armstrong and Kerr.
Armstrong nailed a hat trick in the third, with a short-handed goal assisted by Elliott and goaltender Justin Hammond, a second assisted by Elliott and Gross, and a third from Nic Carter and Gross.
Elliott scored his third of the night for the hat trick, from McCracken. Carter got a goal of his own, assisted by Jacklin, and C. Pellett got the sixth of the period – the ninth of the game – assisted by Drew Shantz.
