Hailee Thomson was the hitting star for the Godfather Peewees last Tuesday night.
The Huron-Perth Fastball League game last Tuesday, July 17 at Teddy’s Field featured the undefeated 11-0 Mitchell No. 2 team and the 11-1 Godfather Peewee girls squad from St. Marys.
It was expected to be a close, exciting game, and the two teams didn’t disappoint.
Mitchell opened up a 4-0 first-inning lead, but held just a 4-3 advantage after two frames. St. Marys pulled ahead by two in the third, and stayed ahead until the sixth when the visitors tied it up.
In the seventh, Bailey Wiffen walked and then Hailee Thomson smashed her second home run of the game to lift the Godfather crew to a thrilling 8-6 victory. The win also moved the St. Marys girls into sole possession of first place in the nine-team league.
Thomson also homered with two runners aboard in the bottom of the first.
Ashlyn Maxwell pitched the entire game for St. Marys and did a great job. Maxwell got strong defence behind her, with Makenzie Blight making a great catch in centre field in the second inning. Makayla McKay also made a beautiful tag to get a runner out trying to steal second base.
“Great pitching, great hitting, great fielding . . . priceless,” Godfathers’ coach Rob Wiffen reported.
Two homers in Exeter
The Godfather Peewees continued their winning ways with a 17-12 victory in Exeter last Thursday night.
Brenna Algra and Makenzie Blight both socked home runs for St. Marys, now 13-1.
Note: The Godfather Peewees and Mitchell No. 2 have both scored over 200 runs to date this season. The teams have one regular-season game against each other left to play.
