Shauna Simpson, of the Senior Salukis, looks for an open teammate during their Huron-Perth quarter-final playoff game at Stratford Central last Wednesday.

Both Salukis girls basketball teams sidelined

STRATFORD – The two DCVI girls basketball teams were both eliminated in the Huron-Perth League quarter-final playoffs last Wednesday.

Here at Stratford Central, the host Rams defeated the Senior Salukis 39-26. Central was in front 9-4 after the first quarter and 21-12 at half-time, and extended its lead to 36-20 by the three-quarter mark.

Rams had a total of five three-pointers on the day, which proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. Sue Lawrence’s DCVI squad played hard from start to finish, but couldn’t get enough shots to drop.

Guard Stacey Brookshaw paced Central’s offence with 10 points. She also distributed the ball well.

Maggie Foster added nine points, Sonja Andrekovic eight points, and Olivia Croft six.

Shauna Simpson led St. Marys with nine points. Kristyn Armstrong had five points, and Courtney Dowling and Hannah Stacey three apiece.

In other Senior quarter-finals, Northwestern Huskies defeated Mitchell Blue Devils 58-38 and South Huron Panthers defeated Goderich Vikings 42-23.

Juniors nipped 25-24

At Clinton St. Anne’s CSS, the Junior Salukis watched their H-P season come to an end with a 25-24 loss to the home-town Eagles.

Yris VanderPloeg had six points to pace the St. Anne’s offence. Emma Waymouth netted eight points for St. Marys, while Cassie Fenz, Nicole Marriott and Ashlyn Maxwell had four apiece.

“We had a last shot to win, but missed it,” Jr. Salukis’ coach Scott Shaddick reported.

In other H-P Junior playoff games last Wednesday, South Huron Panthers defeated Mitchell Blue Devils 47-28, and St. Mikes Warriors defeated Northwestern Huskies 33-18.

Semi-finals: In today’s (Nov. 7) Jr. semi-finals, St. Mikes hosts South Huron and undefeated Stratford Central entertains St. Anne’s.

On the Senior side, Northwestern hosts South Huron, and St. Mikes will get home-court advantage against Central.

Both the Junior and Senior finals will be held on Monday, Nov. 12.

Note: St. Marys DCVI hosts WOSSAA on Thursday, Nov. 15 for the Junior and Senior girls.
