ANAF Bantams go undefeated at Silver Stick Regionals

WATFORD – The ANAF ‘BB' Bantams capped a perfect five-win week here Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Centre-Wellington (Fergus) in the championship game.It gave Greg Smale's charges the ‘A' Division title at the annual Roy Caley Memorial Regional Silver Stick tournament, and a berth in the International S.S. event in Port Huron, Mich. later this month.At the Regionals, the ANAF squad allowed only four goals against and they also posted three shutout wins'including two on the final day. Andy O'Connell earned two shutouts at the Regionals, including the one against Centre Wellington.The Rock opened the tourney by defeating Woodstock 4-0, North London Nationals 3-2 and Mooretown 5-2. O'Connell posted the shutout against Woodstock, Kyle Spence got the winner against North London, and Braiden Weston scored twice against Mooretown.On Sunday, the ANAF crew defeated London Bandits 5-0 in the semi-finals to earn a berth in the championship later that day. Weston and Greg Swan propelled the St. Marys offence with two goals apiece, and Mitch Blacklock recorded the shutout.Against Centre-Wellington, St. Marys scored a goal in each period. Captain Rhett Lucas, Greg Swan and Derek Van De Walle scored for St. Marys, while Braiden Weston contributed two assists.Smale said a "total team effort" was the big reason his team brought home the Regional S.S. banner."We had a really good team effort down there," the coach said Sunday evening. "The goalies and defence played really well, and we got some big games out of the forwards."Smale noted that "team defence" was the reason for his team's low goals-against record in Watford."It's a team effort, and everybody is helping out," he explained. "The forwards are backchecking, and the defence is getting the puck of our zone and clearing rebounds for the goalies. Everyone is playing as a team, and that's the key for us right now."After losing Colton Drinkwalter to injury in the semi-finals, Smale said his remaining five defenceman "stepped up" and met the challenge in the final game.Five SMMHA teams (two girls and three boys) have now won Silver Stick tournaments this season.Upcoming: The ANAF Bantams now head to the prestigious Port Huron International Silver Stick tournament, Jan. 27-30.
