Wingham Ironmen’s Aaron Armstrong is only six points away from setting a new Western Junior C points record. The present record was set by Hanover’s Dave Hopkins in 1986-87 – 113 points.

With 108 points and five games to go in the regular season, he stands a good chance. Armstrong has earned several points in each of the last two games he’s played. Of the seven goals scored against Mount Forest Friday night in Wingham (final score – 7-3 for Wingham), Armstrong accounted for two of them – the short-handed one earned him his  100th point – and assisted on four more. Saturday night in Mount Forest was pretty much a repeat – of the six goals scored by Wingham, Armstrong got one and assisted on four more. Final score was 6-2 for Wingham.

The Ironmen are in fourth place in the league with 36 points, just one behind Mitchell and seven ahead of fifth-place Mount Forest. Walkerton continues to dominate the league with 52 points, followed by Kincardine with 43.

Friday’s game in Wingham was fairly even for the first two periods. Wingham led 2-0 at the end of the first, with goals by Nic Carter assisted by Steve Kerr, and Armstrong from Blair Goss. Mount Forest tied the game in the second with goals by Dean Nixon from Brad Larkin, and Ben Davis from Dave Culliton and Nixon. A goal by Wingham’s Travis Donaldson from Armstrong put the Ironmen back on the winning side of the scoreboard by the end of the period.

A short-handed goal by Armstrong in the third period (his ninth short-handed goal of the season), with assists from Derek Elliott and Darren Kerr, got things rolling for the Ironmen. Then Elliott scored on the powerplay from Armstrong and Drew Gross. Mount Forest tried to come back with a goal by Davis from Culliton and Nixon, but Wingham replied with two more, Joey Terwoord from Evan Ducharme and Armstrong, and a short-handed goal by Elliott from Armstrong, to end the game 7-3.

Saturday night in Mount Forest saw the Patriots actually take more shots on goal than Wingham, but the Ironmen made theirs count.

Wingham took an early lead with goals by Greg Scott from Donaldson and Armstrong, Ducharme from Brayden Pellett and Cole Pellett, and Donaldson from Armstrong and Elliott. Mount Forest came back with a goal by Luke Richardson from Trevor Hughson and Mitch Betts to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period.

The Patriots closed the gap with a powerplay goal by Culliton from Nixon and Davis, but Wingham’s Elliott scored from Donaldson and Armstrong, and Armstrong got one of his own, assists going to Matt Baker and Kerr. Elliott scored short-handed in the third, assisted by Armstrong, to make the score 6-2.

Wingham will be in Kincardine Friday night for an 8:30 game, and returns to the North Huron Wescast Community Complex Saturday night to host Hanover. The puck drops at 7:30.

Ironmen GM Rob Harrison said he’d like to see the arena filled for that Saturday night game in the expectation it could be one that goes down in Jr. C hockey history.
