Wingham Ironmen beat Walkerton 6-4

Wingham Advance Times

The Wingham fans who travelled to Walkerton for Friday night's game against the league-leading Hawks weren't disappointed – the Ironmen battled to claim a 6-4 victory.

Wingham's Aaron Armstrong, leading the league in scoring with 89 points, got the Ironmen on the scoreboard Friday night with his first on the way to a hat trick, assisted by Darren Kerr and Derek Elliott. That was it for scoring in the first period.

In an entertaining second period, both teams scrambled for the puck with the Hawks and Ironmen taking turns scoring – Walkerton's Drew Davidson unassisted (Davidson is second to Armstrong in points at 65), Wingham's Elliott from Travis Donaldson, Walkerton's Shane MacDonald from Haden Campbell and Adam Alexander, back to Wingham with Armstrong scoring on the powerplay from Elliott and Joey Terwoord, Walkerton's MacDonald unassisted, Wingham's Brett Brophy from Cole Pellett and Dylan Williams, and Walkerton's Brandon Lamothe from Davidson, to end the period at 4-4.

Elliott broke the tie in the third with a goal from Armstrong and Kerr. Then Armstrong put the game away for Wingham with his third of the night on the powerplay, assisted by Donaldson and Drew Shantz.

The last couple of minutes, fans were treated to some of the most exciting hockey seen this season as Walkerton fought to even the score. Wingham got a couple of penalties and the Hawks pulled their goalie for yet another attacker, but to no avail. The Ironmen had come to the Hawk's Nest determined to win, and win they did.

Unfortunately, the game against Mitchell Saturday ended in a 6-4 defeat for the Ironmen, despite the fact the Ironmen took 40 shots on goal to the opposition's 28 (Friday's game saw the Ironmen take 46 shots on goal to the Hawks' 24).

Mitchell opened scoring, Scott Fries from Dillon Drinkwalter. Brophy replied for Wingham, assisted by Elliott and Armstrong.

In the second, Mitchell's Jade Maxwell scored twice on his way to a hat trick, the first unassisted and the second from Tyler Tolton. Teammate Jerry Ennet scored on the powerplay, assisted by Luke Salter and Nathan Templeman. Wingham tried to even it up with two goals, Elliott from Terwoord and Armstrong, and Kerr from Armstrong.

But Mitchell came back in the third to add to their lead. Maxwell got his hat trick, a short-handed goal from Brent Rae and Tolton. Then Templeman scored from Ennet and Salter. Terwoord got one more for Wingham before the clock ran out, assisted by Armstrong and Donaldson, leaving the Ironmen at the losing end of a 6-4 score.

The Ironmen host the Hanover Barons Friday, Dec. 21, and return to Walkerton Saturday, Dec. 22.
