The Walkerton Hawks are back on top of the Western Junior C standings this week after winning two games over the weekend.

That put them two points ahead of the Kincardine Bulldogs, who took the top spot last week.

Friday, the Hawks took on the Wingham Ironmen and defeated them 7-2, while Saturday’s game against the Hanover Barons was much closer; the Hawks squeaking by 5-4.

Haden Campbell scored the Hawks’ first goal on Friday half-way through the first period, assisted by Jay Thomson and Adam Alexander, and Wade Pfeffer made the score 2-0 off of David Gallo, going into the second.

Wingham owned the second period, with league scoring leader Aaron Armstrong’s goal on the powerplay, and then he assisted another Ironmen powerplay goal three seconds before the buzzer, tying the game heading into the third.

Walkerton pulled up their socks and muscled five goals in the third. Campbell scored his second of the game early on, assisted by Wendel Cameron. Austin Russell added a shorthanded goal, with help from Drew Davidson. Gallo added another shorthanded goal, assisted by Davidson just over a minute later.

Pfeffer then scored unassisted at 14:34, and Jay Thomson wrapped things up with help from Campbell and Alexander with a few minutes to go in the game.

Jeff Flagler earned the win with 31 saves, while Ben Errington took the loss with 19 saves.

Saturday was a comeback game, as the Hawks were down 3-1 after the first period, and still down 4-2 after the second before catching up in the third.

The Barons struck first just over a minute into the game, and followed up in the second half of the period. The Hawks’ first goal came when Connor Patton bent the twine at 15:18, with Davidson’s and Lauchlin Elder’s help. Hanover scored one more time before the buzzer went.

Hanover scored a shorthanded goal to start the second period, putting them up 4-1, before Alexander began the Hawks’ comeback, on the powerplay, assisted by Thomson at 13:32.

The Hawks swooped in the third, with the Hawks having the man-advantage for most of the period. Connor Patton scored at 3:32, assisted by Elder and Davidson. Newcomer, Joel Bowman, who has come to the Hawks by way of Wingham, scored the equalizer half-way through the third. Campbell scored the game-winner with two minutes left on the clock, off of Alexander and Pfeffer.

New recruit Justin Hammond was in net for the first period and gave up three goals on 11 shots. Flagler stepped in for the remainder of the game, recording the win, with 21 saves on 22 shots. Mitch Campbell made 32 saves in the loss.

Walkerton has a busy weekend coming up. They’ll face Mitchell this Friday for the first time since they lost to the other Hawks 4-3 on Oct. 13. That game is 8:30 p.m. in Walkerton. They’ll then head to Mount Forest on Saturday night, for an 8 p.m. game against the Patriots. They will also play the Barons again on Sunday at 4 p.m. in Hanover.
