Turn ‘em off!

Not All There by Ann Hepburn

They have their tree up already?? Driving through town the other day I see the glimmer of Christmas lights. We are over a month until Christmas. I love the Holiday season – people are nicer, shopping is glorious and fun when you are getting the perfect gifts for people. Sparkling lights, colourful ornaments, decorations, and of course the magic of Santa Claus.

I am a huge fan of Santa. I like the earning of the reward – none of this show up and get a trophy stuff, you have to work for the recognition. There is a goal, and good behaviour is rewarded! The whole thing for me is magical. Time with family, cuddling up to watch a Christmas classic – National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is my favourite, and not a year goes by without it! I love Santa Clause and Santa Clause 2, not a fan of 3 though. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, A Christmas Carol, oh the list goes on.

We have a Christmas Eve tradition in our home – pizza for supper (about as far away from turkey as you can get – and Mom can save her cooking energy for Christmas day!) Usually a couple of the classic shows during dinner, then Christmas Vacation (the theme song is running in my head as I write this…) And thanks to my amazing son – I don’t have to tape it, and complain about the parts they cut out this year – he bought me the DVD!!! Hey, I could watch it tonight…

Following the movie, I read to my son (who is very tolerant of this tradition, even now as a man) two stories; The Polar Express and The Night Before Christmas. Following this the laying out of the stockings, the milk, the cookies, and of course carrots for Rudolph. Then I try to sleep!

I however do not put up my tree and decorations until mid December. I want them to be special, I want the limited exposure. I never, never want to get tired of having the house decked out. Up they go between Dec 12 and Dec 18, down on Jan 2, no exceptions. Outside lights go on after Dec 5, and off Jan 2. You will never drive by my house mid January and still see Christmas lights on – never.

So to each his own, but I like my Holiday season to be December. I do not rip down the pumpkins, witches and ghouls and immediately replace them with Santa, Elves and reindeer. I like a bit of anticipation. But put your Christmas on when you like, but I beg of you, turn it off after the Holidays – not sometime in June!

As we head into the season, stay safe, spend within your limits, and as always, be yourself, everyone else is taken!
