Santa’s coming to town!

Walkerton Herald-Times

John McPhee, McThoughts

I can’t believe that Tuula and I are out putting up the Christmas decorations again. What happened to November? Where did October go?

On Sunday Toronto had its annual parade with an estimated record crowd of more than one million lining the streets to watch under clear, sunny (and warmer than normal) skies. Perhaps that’s why it seems harder than usual to get ‘into the spirit’ so far this year with such great weather. I’m wondering if the grass should be cut one more time, not where to put the snow shovels.

This Saturday night will be Brockton’s turn to welcome the big (little) guy with our annual parade. While they’ll probably won’t be as many as Toronto had along the streets, the turn out is still pretty impressive for a smaller community.

And you can thank the Walkerton Chamber of Commerce and B.I.A. for the great weather we’re having – this year’s parade theme is ‘A tropical Christmas’.

So bring your Bermuda Shorts downtown Saturday night at 7 p.m. to watch the annual fun. Reports say registrations for floats are down this year, so there’s lots of room to fit in new ones for the parade. Santa will also be at the library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for one-on-one visits.

To help get us in the mood, the weather promises a chance of snow flurries Saturday. That’s a start at least. But, regardless of what the weather says, the calendar says the Christmas season is upon us. So I guess I better put away the patio furniture as I decorate around the house.

Speaking of time going fast, this month marks my 10th anniversary with The WHT. Now that’s probably nine years and 364 days longer that some would have liked, but it’s been a great time for me over the years as I’ve gotten to know a lot of incredible people who are so dedicated to helping others. Brockton is indeed a very vibrant and passionate community. Here’s to another 10!
