School’s almost in

Exeter Times-Advocate

Casey Cyr, Get Real

Seeing the “Back to School” flyers, signs and commercials has inspired some reminiscing.

I was always someone who enjoyed school and by the end of August I couldn’t wait to see my friends. I loved the social network and the fact that I had deadlines. I enjoyed the teachers and the new people I met.

I couldn’t wait to get to the first high school assembly just as much as I was champing at the bit to move into my first dorm room and meet my new roommate. I remember in the first year of university I felt like I was still on holidays for the first month. Independence was new and I had plenty of great adventures. I loved what I was learning!

What about you? Are you a scholar? Did you actually enjoy school? Was it fun or completely boring? Did you skip class or have the perfect attendance record? With “Back to School” on the horizon would you ever want to go back? I certainly wouldn’t mind.

We are so blessed to have an education despite the fact that we “have to go.” But it really is a gift that we can go to school to learn. In other countries children and young people must have sponsors that pay per month for them to attend grade and high school. Here we have the privilege of going to school until we are at least 16 years old.

Those of you who have graduated and are headed for a place in the workforce you didn’t study for, I have some encouragement for you. Even if you aren’t in your field right away, you can’t say that your education was a waste of time or money. Going to school helped me organize my time, meet deadlines, think critically, emerge myself in a diversity of culture and build a social network with people from all over the world.

Yes, we truly have it made in Canada. So as school approaches, although some may beg to differ, remain positive and thankful that you’re able to go. I sometimes wish I were in your shoes!
