Dear Editor:

Re: “Consumer support for farmers — only to a point,” by Bob Reid, Regional Country News, February, 2012.

Mr. Reid is dead on the money in his observations about the consumer not worrying about the plight of the farmer/producer in the food chain! We have no national food policy in this country, and yet food is so essential to our very existence.

My non-farm friends and relatives want only one thing...cheap food. They could care less about the farmer. Many see them as lucky for the kind of job they have (no boss to answer to, set their own hours, work close to home, etc.). They have no comprehension of production costs, producer prices versus store prices.

And increasingly, they are very comfortable with offshore suppliers as long as that price in the grocery store is low, low, low! There is even an increasing comfort with China supplying food to Canadians.

I have defended farmers at family gatherings and in hockey arenas to increasingly deaf ears. Just give me cheap food, they say. It saddens me and scares me as to who will supply the food on our tables and at what quality and safety assurances.
