Police charge AMDSB staff member with sexual exploitation

An educational assistant at Shakespeare Public school has been charged with sexual exploitation of a student.

Police allege Gilbert James Pinkney, 38, of Guelph, engaged in sexual activity with a student outside of school hours in the late ’90s while he was an employee with the Avon Maitland District School Board.

Steve Howe, communitactions manager for the AMDSB, says Pinkney will be on leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The board and the school is following all protocols and procedures we have in place when any serious allegations are made against an employee and the priority, as always, is the safety and security of our students and staff,” Howe adds.

Pinkney appeared in Goderich Provincial Court Dec. 7 and was released on bail. His next court appearance is Jan. 14 at 9 a.m. The court placed a ban on publication of any information that could lead to the identity of the complainant.
