Man sentenced to jail for theft of tires, rims

A New Hamburg man has been sentenced to four months in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of theft under $5,000 in Ontario Court of Justice.

Darrin Mueller, 29, appeared in Listowel court on Sept. 28 to answer to charges of stealing two sets of tires and rims from a Listowel dealership in April this year. Mueller’s criminal record includes four prior property-related convictions between 2002 and 2003, including theft, possessing stolen property, and break and enter. In addition to the jail term, Mueller was sentenced to pay $4,814 in restitution and serve two years probation.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

Larry Hamilton, 58, of Listowel, pleaded guilty to sexual assault. On June 23, Hamilton attended a restaurant in Listowel and ordered a coffee, speaking to the employee. At approximately 3:30 a.m., the employee went for her break and Hamilton followed her, speaking with her and asking if she was interested in sexual activity. Hamilton proceeded to touch her over her clothing, despite being told to stop. The employee reported the event to her supervisor and the police, and Hamilton was arrested later that day. Hamilton is to be sentenced on Dec. 7 in Listowel court.

NOT GUILTY

An Alberta man has been cleared of an assault charge after pleading not guilty. Jordan Dick, 20, entered the not guilty plea in Listowel on Sept. 28. Testimony from complainant John Carr revealed that he and John Ballantyne attended Crabby Joe’s restaurant on the night of May 3, and once there Carr overheard Dick being verbally abusive to another bar patron. Carr said he then told Dick to shut up, and Dick was asked to take it outside.
