Local men drowned, missing in swimming incidents

The Labour Day weekend was marred by two separate swimming incidents, leaving one local man dead and another missing.

Bruce Peninsula OPP were called to Sauble Beach just after 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, when 36-year-old Jeremy Gerber of Milverton was pulled from the water amid metre-high waves. CPR was performed and Gerber was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A separate rescue mission has turned into a recovery mission after a 53-year-old Atwood man went missing while boating on Lake Huron, south of Bayfield. Shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2, the Atwood man and a 62-year-old North Perth man jumped into the water, and the two were quickly separated from the boat by the waves. Neither of the men was wearing a personal flotation device when they jumped.

The North Perth man was able to return to the boat but the Atwood man slipped beneath the surface. An aerial, water, and shoreline search for the missing man continued until dark on Sunday and resumed on Monday. The names of those involved had not been released as of press time and the investigation continues.
