ANTI-BULLYING CLUB ‒ Member Brittany Martin thinks the EDSS Gay-Straight Alliance Club's recent name change will promote the its broad focus.

Elmira District Secondary School’s Gay-Straight Alliance becomes Anti-Bullying Club

This October, the name of the EDSS Gay-Straight Alliance Club was changed to the Anti-Bullying Club.

Previously, the club focused on a variety of bullying issues, not only those pertaining to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered  community, so it seemed that a name change might serve as a way to advertise that the club does not only focus on homophobia, but on other types of bullying as well, and that it is working to promote acceptance in all areas.

Anti-Bullying Club member and Grade 12 student at EDSS Brittany Martin feels that the name change gives a new aspect to the club.

“The GSA talked a lot about bullying and discrimination, as well as LGBTQ issues.  A couple weeks ago, [this was pointed out] and it was suggested that we go broad-spectrum, and focus on all the issues, not just LGBTQ specific ones,” Martin says.

The club is trying to get more students aware of and involved with their efforts.  The club’s current member count is relatively low, although still an improvement from two years ago, when the number of members totaled to just four students.  Most of the current members are senior students who will be graduating in June, so it is the club’s hope to get younger members joining, to ensure that the club will be able to continue for years to come.

The club’s name change is one that members hope will entice a greater number of students who are interested in a variety of bullying and discrimination issues to become more active in the school, and will make students in the school aware that the group works to fight bullying in all forms.

The EDSS Anti-Bullying Club meets Thursdays at lunch in room 114, and all are welcome.
