Elementary teachers with the Avon Maitland District School Board have put their plans to participate in a one-day strike tomorrow on hold, pending a decision later today from the Ontario Labour Relations Board, which is set to rule on whether a one-day strike is illegal.
Teachers across Ontario announced Wednesday their intention to hold a walkout in response to the provincial government’s imposed labour contracts.
If the strike goes on, all Avon Maitland elementary schools, including the Grade 7-8 programs at its secondary schools, will be closed to students Friday, Jan. 11. Children who ride a school bus will not be picked up on that day.
The board anticipates all of its elementary schools will be reopened on Monday for regular classes.
The board was informed by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario of the job action Wednesday, and, according to a statement on its website, is making every effort to provide the public with sufficient notice to make any alternate day care arrangements.
All Avon Maitland secondary schools will be open for regular classes for students in Grades 9-12 on Friday.
The board continues to post any updates as they become available on its site at yourschools.ca/labour-update.
