There were around 220 head of cattle in the barn and most were able to escape. Firefighters and neighbours herd the cattle into trucks to remove them from the scene.

Barn destroyed in fire near Elmira; damages nearly $500,000

ELMIRA — Damage is set at $475,000 after a barn fire northwest of Waterloo overnight.

The barn at 2319 Floradale Rd. was engulfed in flames when Woolwich township firefighters arrived at about 12:45 a.m. Monday, said Staff Sgt. Paul Driedger of Waterloo Regional police.

Nearly 200 cattle were rushed out of the barn, but two perished inside the burning building, the township says. Three more were injured and were euthanized.

In all, about 60 volunteer firefighters from Floradale, St. Jacobs, Elmira and Conestogo battled the fire. Firefighters from St. Clements and Drayton brought more water tankers.

Firefighters stopped the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Embers fell as far as a half-kilometre away, near Floradale Public School.

The fire was under control by 3:10 a.m. The rubble is expected to smoulder for the next two days.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
