Avon Maitland teachers plan day-long strike

The Avon Maitland District School Board was notified late Wednesday by the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) that it is one of two boards in the province targeted for teacher protests on Monday, December 10.

It will be the first day-long strikes by Ontario’s elementary teachers.

All Avon Maitland elementary schools will be closed to students on Monday. This includes the Grade 7-8 programs in Avon Maitland secondary schools.

“We are making every effort to provide you with sufficient notice to make whatever alternate day care arrangements you will need to make for your children,” said a statement on the Avon Maitland board website. “Please do  not drop your child off at your school on Monday as there will not be adequate supervision available.”

The board anticipates that all of our elementary schools will reopen the following day for regular classes; however, ETFO job sanctions will still be in place at that time, which could result in the cancellation or postponement of other events or activities.

Not sure if this make sense. Teachers want to strike for one day, abandon their responsibilities, and cause a ripple like effect for many struggling families. Considering the unemployment rate in that area, none of this makes sense. I’m sure that there are hundreds of unemployed teachers who will gladly step in for one day and do the job!
