An angry Wellington North Mayor Ray Tout told ratepayer Jens Dam, at Monday’s regular meeting of council, that the “wide and varied accusations” he is making against the mayor, his council and township staff are “inappropriate. Such allegations are as false as they are fanciful.”
Mr. Dam took council to the OMB over its handling of development charges and has been appearing regularly as a delegation at council meetings. A month ago he asked council to explain who authorized paying $80,000 in development charges refunds and was told council would get a legal opinion. This week he asked for a copy of that legal opinion.
Mayor Tout reminded Mr. Dam that, as he is well aware, the township’s development charges bylaw is currently before the OMB, with a full hearing scheduled to commence Jan. 22.
“Since this matter is before the OMB, these matters are best left to that body to hear and determine the proper outcome of this dispute,” the mayor said. “Council takes opposition to the significant allegations that Mr. Dam makes, which may give rise to recourse at a later date.”
Following the meeting, Mayor Tout told reporters that Mr. Dam’s accusations are “borderlining slanderous” to his council and staff whom he described as “hardworking people doing the best we can.” He accused Mr. Dam of “grandstanding” as he goes over the same issues month after month.
