Crediton Cubs are 2014 ladies fastball league champions

Exeter Times-Advocate

CREDITON - The Crediton Cubs ladies fastball team have reached the pinnacle of success winning the 'A' league championship in suspense and style, as always.

The Cubs had to win their final league game to cinch the win. If the local squad had lost, they would have been tied with the Byron Intermediates.

Crediton 6 vs. London Impact 4

A very strong club from south London found the final game of the season very suspenseful until the Cubs' win in extra innings.

The Impact team jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning and maintained its lead until the fourth inning. Ange Gould hit a single hit and scored on a misplayed bunt by Nicole Devereaux. A bad throw to first base was missed, which caused the ball to head down the fence line into right field. The speedy Gould and Devereaux both scored.

In the sixth inning, the Cubs thought they had secured the win scoring two more runs. Staci Miller hit a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kathy Glen, Gould and Devereaux both walked and Melissa Pertschy scored Gould and Miller with a single hit to left field.

In the bottom of the seventh, Impact scored three consecutive hits to lead off the inning, scoring three runs to tie the game.

The game went into an international tie breaker with Glen starting on second base. Gould moved Glen to third and single hits from Devereaux, Pertschy and Carrie Dixon found two Cubs cross the plate.

Katie Feltz, Cubs pitcher for the night again found her niche and struck out all three batters leaving the Impact player stranded on second base.

The win was a 'sweet' victory for the Cubs. Last year, the Cubs ended in second place but found themselves in third place after teams finished their season's games. This year, no one can touch the Cubs as they only lost one game all season when they were defeated by the Byron Intermediate

Crediton 7 vs. Byron Jrs. 0

The Crediton Cubs scored in the first inning against the Byron Jrs. and never looked back. The team kept its opponents scoreless.

Gould led her team at the plate with a grand slam home run, double and single. Julie Datars hit a long triple and added a single. Pertschy and Kathy Glen each had two singles. Single hits came from Miller, Devereaux, Dixon, Mary Glen, Nikki Cyr and Carissa Desjardine.

Dixon was Crediton's starting pitcher with relief from Feltz.

Crediton 6 vs. Otterville 2

With a mismatch of players and spares, the Cubs were able to win their game against Otterville. The team really showed depth with the majority of players playing positions not normal for them.

Devereaux led her team at the plate with a triple and single, Dixon and Feltz hit two singles. Single hits came from Deanna Rush, Lindsey Govers, Mary Glen and Amanda Gadsby.

Feltz pitched for Crediton notching eight strikeouts.

Crediton 24 vs. Chippewa 2

The game against Chippewa started out close with a 1-1 score in the first inning until Crediton broke the game open scoring 10 runs in the second inning. The Cubs mercied Chippewa in five innings.

Devereaux led her team at the plate with two doubles and a single. Kathy Glen went four for four with a walk, triple and two singles. Amber Preszcator and Rush each notched a double and two singles. Three single hits apiece came from the bats of Feltz, Gadsby, Pertschy and Datars. Two single hits were added by Mary Glen and Dixon.

Dixon and Feltz shared pitching duties.

Crediton 3 vs. Byron Int. 2

A hard-fought win made the Crediton Cubs very proud. This win meant the Byron Int. would not sweep the Cubs and this crucial win is one of the main reasons the Cubs maintained first place.

In the bottom of the fourth, Byron took the lead with two runs. Crediton replied in the fifth with three runs. The Cubs were able to keep their opponents scoreless only allowing four batters for the next three innings.

Nikki Cyr led her team at the plate with a double and single. Kathy Glen hit a long double to tie the game. Single hits came from Pertschy and Miller.

Feltz pitched for Crediton striking out 11 batters.

Crediton 3 vs. London Lightning 2

A four-point game against the London Lightning was a 'nail biter' for the players, coaches and fans.

Lightning scored two runs in the first inning. Crediton replied with two runs with two out in the third inning to tie the game. In the seventh inning, Mary Glen reached first with a single and stole second base. Feltz moved Glen to third with a single to centre field. A long fly ball by Nikki Cyr with a error from Lightning's right fielder scored the winning run.

Kathy Glen hit a triple and double. Desjardine hit a double and single. Devereaux hit a long triplein the third inning to tie the game up. Mary Glen hit two singles and single hits came from Datars, Dixon, Feltz and Cyr.
