CREDITON - The Crediton Cubs ladies fastball team have reached the pinnacle of success winning the 'A' league championship in suspense and style, as always.
The Cubs had to win their final league game to cinch the win. If the local squad had lost, they would have been tied with the Byron Intermediates.
Crediton 6 vs. London Impact 4
A very strong club from south London found the final game of the season very suspenseful until the Cubs' win in extra innings.
The Impact team jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning and maintained its lead until the fourth inning. Ange Gould hit a single hit and scored on a misplayed bunt by Nicole Devereaux. A bad throw to first base was missed, which caused the ball to head down the fence line into right field. The speedy Gould and Devereaux both scored.
In the sixth inning, the Cubs thought they had secured the win scoring two more runs. Staci Miller hit a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kathy Glen, Gould and Devereaux both walked and Melissa Pertschy scored Gould and Miller with a single hit to left field.
In the bottom of the seventh, Impact scored three consecutive hits to lead off the inning, scoring three runs to tie the game.
The game went into an international tie breaker with Glen starting on second base. Gould moved Glen to third and single hits from Devereaux, Pertschy and Carrie Dixon found two Cubs cross the plate.
Katie Feltz, Cubs pitcher for the night again found her niche and struck out all three batters leaving the Impact player stranded on second base.
The win was a 'sweet' victory for the Cubs. Last year, the Cubs ended in second place but found themselves in third place after teams finished their season's games. This year, no one can touch the Cubs as they only lost one game all season when they were defeated by the Byron Intermediate
