Harriston Youth Centre grand re-opening March 22

HARRISTON, PALMERSTON – The Deck youth centre in Harriston has been open for 12 years and has seen a lot of changes over that time.  Recently, the centre closed for a few months to raise some funds and do some needed renovations.

YFC director Pat Savage said he and some volunteers have been busy working and getting the centre into shape. The biggest addition to the Upper Deck is the Coffee Corner, a new coffee bar, which Savage hopes to draw on the popularity of other well know coffee shops.

“It has a Coffee Culture feel to it,” he said. “I want to give the teens a place to sit with their friends and get a drink and be comfortable.”

“We have added a new movie projector, computers and video games,” said Savage. The teens are supervised to guard against any inappropriate content that is readily available.

The grand re-opening will be held on Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m.

“The Harriston Deck is open Friday nights now, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. We were able to get more volunteers and it is a better night for teens on a whole to go out.” he said.

The centre has been open for over a month on Friday nights. “I want parents and teens to know that we are in the community,” said Savage.

New programs will include movie nights, music nights, and regular drop-in nights. Teens from 10 - 18 are welcome. The Palmerston Mobile Youth Centre is open now on Thursday nights from 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. “We changed the hours to get more volunteers, we ran a pilot project to see if lunch time or after school worked best and after school was the winner,” he said.

The Mobile Youth Centre is held at the Lion’s building on Main Street in Palmerston but in the warmer weather, YFC uses their 35-foot RV and parks it in the L&M parking lot.
