Lucan Peewee Girls International Silver Stick Finalists

Exeter Times-Advocate

SARNIA – The Lucan Irish Peewee Girls Rep team came close, but couldn't claim the Peewee 'B' International Silver Stick title in Sarnia Feb. 3.

Lucan dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision in the final again the host Sarnia squad in a game coach Justin Fidler said could have gone either way.

"We outplayed them, we outshot them," he said. "With about six minutes left in the third they got a lucky bounce, the puck bounced over our defenceman's stick and they came down and scored a fabulous goal."

While the team tried everything to come back, Fidler said they just couldn't score.

"Sarnia's goaltender played amazing, as did ours, we just couldn't get the puck in the net," he explained.

Overall, Fidler said he and the coaching staff were proud of the team's effort and improvement over the course of the year, which was evident at the tournament.

"All 13 players deserve to be recognized," he said. "The girls stepped up, played amazing hockey and never took a shift off."

Lucan opened the tournament Feb. 1 against the host Sarnia squad, playing to a 3-3 tie.

Fidler noted Lucan was down 3-1 in the game, but clawed back to tie the score.

In a hard-fought battle, Lucan came away with a 2-1 win over Walkerton in their second game.

"We'd only beat them once all year in the regular season," Fidler explained, "so it was nice to beat them again."

Lucan defeated Orillia 5-2 in their third game, before falling 4-2 to a team from Livonia, Mich., to end round-robin play.

The loss left Lucan in third place, setting up a rematch with second-place Livonia in the semifinal.

In what Fidler called an unbelievable game, Lucan booked their ticket to the championship game with a 3-1 win.

"Both teams played amazing and deserved to win," he said of the game. "Unfortunately there's always a winner and a loser and we were lucky enough to be the winner."
