The Arthur Atom Rep Vipers swept the Wainfleet Wild in three straight games in the preliminary best of five OMHA Playdowns. Arthur won the flip for home ice advantage getting the Vipers the first two games at home.
On January 20 Arthur took game number one with a 4-0 win. Aiden McDougall opened the scoring in the first period with a goal assisted by Dylan Richardson and Erin Rooney. Ryan Goetz scored two goals in the second period the first assisted by Cameron DeForest and the second assisted by Ben Saunders. McDougall scored the final goal of the game assisted by Cooper Fleet. Julian Austin was unchallenged in goal only facing a few shots.
Wainfleet was back in town on January 26 for game number two. Richardson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the first period but before the period was out the Wild scored to knot the score at 1-1 going into the second period.
Wainfleet scored the go ahead goal in the second but Arthur answered back with a goal by Richardson assisted by Rooney and McDougall. The score was tied 2-2 after two periods of play. Arthur came to life in the third with three unanswered goals. Goetz scored assisted by Fleet. Richardson scored his third of the game for a hat trick assisted by Rooney and Jabe Verbeek. Deforest scored assisted by Verbeek and Isaac Major. The final was 5-2 Arthur to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Aiden Barrina played well in net.
The Vipers traveled south to Wainfleet for game number three January 27. Richardson opened the first period scoring with an unassisted goal. Wainfleet followed with a goal but Goetz scored assisted by DeForest to retake the lead. Wainfleet scored two more goals to end the first period up by a goal at 3-2. In the opening two minutes of the second period the Vipers scored three goals. I guess the boys and Erin finally woke up from the long trip! DeForest scored assisted by Goetz and Major, Richardson scored assisted by Rooney and McDougall, and DeForest scored assisted by Saunders. Arthur led 5-3 going into the third period. McDougall started the third period scoring assisted by Rooney and Saunders. This was followed by a goal by DeForest assisted by Saunders. McDougall scored assisted by Saunders and Rooney. The Wild scored but McDougall answered with an unassisted goal scored by undressing the defense with some moves worthy of a viral internet video! In the third Period it was a McDougall, Saunders, and Rooney clinic! The game ended 9-4 thanks to hat tricks by DeForest and McDougall! Austin was busy in net making some fantastic saves!
The Vipers will now advance to the quarterfinals against an undetermined opponent from the London area.
