Three-goal first period propels Wellesley past Burford

The Wellesley Applejacks rode a three-goal first period en route to a 5-1 victory over the Burford Bulldogs, Sunday.

The win snapped a two-game slide for the Applejacks, which had lost 5-2 to Ayr (Dec. 20) and 5-2 to Hagersville (Dec. 19) earlier in the week.

Cody Tapsell scored twice and added two assist in the win over the Bulldogs. Brett MacDonald, Blake Hetherington and Luke Rose rounded out the scoring.

Assists went to Hetherington (2), Patrick Wiejak, Taylor Doering, Tyler MacLaughlin, Matt Toncic and Rose.

Tyler Vandenbussche scored for Burford.

Dec. 20, the Applejacks lost 5-2 at Ayr. The Centennials broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with three unanswered goals en route to victory.

Devon Wagner and Corey Way scored for the Wellesley, with assists to Derek Lebold and Wiejak.

Scoring for Ayr were Alex Richard (2), Jordan Eby, Connor McLeod and Ben Poort.

Dec. 19, Hagersville rallied from a 2-1 deficit to hand the Applejacks a 5-2 defeat at Wellesley.

Troy Williams and Tapsell scored for the home side, with assists to Corey Way, Josh Herd, Doering and Wiejak.

Scoring for the Hagersville Hawks were Jacob Erwin, Nick Halliday (2), Hayden Baird, and Jesse Ross.

Wellesley (17-10-1) hosts Ayr on Saturday (Dec. 29) and Delhi (Dec. 30). Game times are 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. respectively.
