Council chooses architects for pre-design on facilities

SOUTH HURON — Council has chosen the architects who will move forward with the preliminary designs and costing for the proposed revitalization projects for the South Huron Rec Centre and the Exeter and District Swimming Pool.

Invizig Architects Inc. was awarded the preliminary design and costing work at a cost of $42,030. The municipality had budgeted $90,000 for the work.

South Huron facilities services manager Dave Atthill and community services manager Jo-Anne Fields reported to council Nov. 19 about the project. Their report noted that the municipality received six proposals for the Rec Centre and five for the pool. Staff and members of council were involved in the process and recommended that council go ahead with Invizig.

Council approved the recommendation, with Coun. Wayne DeLuca congratulating staff for their work on the project. He said Invizig has done a lot of work across the province and reports about the architecture firm were “glowing.”

South Huron chief administrative officer Roy Hardy said the work would proceed in January.

Former Dashwood and Area Medical Office update

Council approved a zoning bylaw amendment request for the former Dashwood and Area Medical Office at 145 Centre St. in Dashwood.

Planner Claire Dodds informed council that the property had recently been bought and a trucking business was proposed for it. In order for the business to proceed, the zoning needed to be changed from Village Residential (Low Density) – Special Provisions to Village Commercial.

She said no new construction for the property is proposed. Dodds also noted traffic in and out of the property will probably be less frequent than when it was used as a medical office.

Dodds said in her report “that the parking/storage of commercial trucks and operation of a transport yard will not be permitted on the subject property.” She noted the property is surrounded by residential properties and planting strips and hedges will need to be maintained.

The property is serviced by municipal water and a sewage holding tank.

Dodds said no building or exterior changes have been proposed other than a new sign. Council approved the zoning bylaw amendment as recommended by Dodds.

Landfill land lease tender

Council awarded the tender for the lease of 45 workable acres of land at Lot 6, South Boundary Concession in Bluewater’s Hay Ward to high bidder Chad Bennewies at $265 per acre per year.

The municipality received two bids for the land.

The new five-year lease starts Jan. 2. The land was being leased for about $155 per acre according to transportation services manager Ken Bettles’ report to council.
