Prom Committee not welcome back to Lucan arena

LUCAN BIDDULPH — Recreation facility co-ordinator Ken Needham reported to Lucan Biddulph council Dec. 3 about trouble involving alcohol at a November rental of the Lucan Community Memorial Centre.

The Medway Prom Committee that rented the facility for a fundraising dance had issues with people bringing liquor into the kitchen and things got out of hand with a number of intoxicated people at the dance.

As a result, the OPP attended and liquor charges were laid. Needham said that security and OPP who were attending the event noticed a number of intoxicated individuals and it was discovered that some of the organizers had allowed people into the dance carrying alcohol in backpacks. OPP attended the scene and a number of charges were laid.

Needham told council he would discuss the issues with the organizers of the dance and let them know they would not be welcome at a Lucan facility in future. He subsequently met with the students and received no reasonable explanation why individuals were allowed to bring liquor into the dance with no permit to do so. Needham told them they would not be allowed back in future. He said it was too bad that this year there were problems.

The Medway Prom Committee has rented the centre for four years and the only problem until now was last year when two tables were broken. Needham said the committee paid for the replacement.

He also pointed out that the Prom Committee is completely separate from Medway High School. The school does not support the organizing or running of the event. Needham added that it was unfortunate this year’s graduates won’t be around for next year and the grads for next year would suffer the consequences of the grads’ actions this year.
