After loss to conference leaders, Sugar Kings win big

It appears the Elmira Sugar Kings have the Guelph Hurricanes' number.

After stringing together three victories to double their win total on the season, Guelph (6-21-0) looked to have righted the ship.

But at the Woolwich Memorial Centre, Sunday, Guelph was trounced 8-1 by the Elmira Sugar Kings which sent the squad to its 21st loss.

It's the fourth time this fall Elmira has defeated Guelph, outscoring the Hurricanes 27-3 in the process. And the teams meet again next week.

On Sunday, it was all Elmira from the get-go. The Sugar Kings scored four times in the first period en route to a lopsided victory. Elmira nearly out shot Guelph by a 3-1 margin, firing 58 shots at the Hurricanes' net.

Sugar King goaltender Hayden Neuman made 20 saves for the win, with Jake Weidner and Brady Campbell pacing the offence. Both players had two goals and two assists.

Justin Cooke chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Rob Kohli, Adam Dauda and Zac Coulter also scored. Brodie Whitehead, Cass Frey, Steven Jakiela, Cash Seraphim, Mitch Wright, Matt Schieck and Pete Croal chipped in with assists.

Craig Martini scored for Guelph.

For Elmira, the win helped erase memories of a Friday's 3-2 shoot-out loss at Caledonia to the Midwestern Conference leaders.

The loss also snapped the Sugar Kings' modest three-game win streak and was the third shoot-out defeat for Elmira in the past 10 games.

The Sugar Kings held a 2-1 edge late in the third on the strength of power-play goals by Seraphim (assisted by Schieck and Campbell) and Campbell (Dauda, Weidner).

Caledonia's Brandon Mountour tied the game with 2:25 to play, then Jeff Swift, who opened the scoring for the Corvairs in the second period, was the only player from both teams to convert in a four-round shootout.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 35 saves for Elmira, which was out shot 37-29.

The Sugar Kings (15-8-3) are back in action on Friday (Dec. 7) at Stratford. Elmira hosts Cambridge on Sunday (Dec. 9) at 2 p.m.
