HARRISTON – Local author and former Toronto resident Margaret Blair and her husband liked Harriston so much, they just decided to stay.

Area residents are invited to attend the Harriston branch of the Wellington County Library on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. Blair will discuss “Gangsters, Billionaires and Two-gun Cohen” – colourful characters of Treaty Port China. She will also be introducing her second book, Shanghai Scarlet, a historical novel about love and death in Old Shanghai.

Blair, 70, was born in China and went to Scotland in 1946. She came to Canada in 1960 and resided in Toronto, but also bought a home outside Harriston.

“After we retired, we sold in Toronto and just stayed here,” Blair told The Express. “We like it very much.”

Blair has been writing since her retirement in 1998. She was previously in social and financial marketing and before that, a teacher. Her first book, Gudao, Lone Islet, The War Years in Shanghai, A Childhood Memoir, came out in 2008. Shanghai Scarlet was released earlier this year.
