Mildred Holmes

Mildred (nee Fitzpatrick) Holmes passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012 at St. Mary’s General Hospital, Kitchener at the age of 88.

Devoted wife of the late Russell W. Holmes (2009). Loving mother of Terry Holmes and Barbara Lynch of Vero Beach, Florida, Tom Holmes of Invermere, B.C., Tim and Sharon Holmes of Perth, Ontario and Jayne Holmes and Kevin Krauel of Waterloo. Sadly missed by her grandchildren Randy, Jessica and Evelyn, and great-grandchild Xavier.

Mildred had a gift for teaching students of all kinds. Whether they were pupils at a one-room school where she began her career, generations of grade-schoolers trooping through St. Anne Catholic Primary School in Kitchener, or new Canadians freshly arrived at Conestoga College in Waterloo for language upgrading, Mildred had the knack. She sent them all down the path of learning and critical thinking.

At home, she fostered a permanent love of reading and music, while stressing her children should play hard outdoors until dark and then come home. At the family cottage in Point Clark, a good swim before breakfast was always encouraged and a good game of cards after dinner was habitual.

In later life, Mildred thrived on the care and support of her children, cousins, nieces, nephews and neighbours and always lived in the family comfort of home.

In keeping with Mildred’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Burial will be in Wingham Cemetery.

Donations to St. Mary’s General Hospital would be appreciated by the family and may be arranged through the Henry Walser Funeral Home, Kitchener (519-749-8467).
