St. John’s Catholic School students hosted their annual Remembrance Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 12.
The Grade 5/6 class, led by teacher Darcy Kirk, opened the ceremony with O’Canada, led by a number of remembrance readings and prayers.
A moment of silence was held, followed by a video “Highway of Heroes.”
A poem of Remembrance was read, followed by the entire class reciting “In Flanders’ Fields.”
The money collected through the poppy sales at the school was presented to Legion Poppy chair Linda Tremble, followed by a hymn and prayer, and the closing of the ceremony.
Following the short ceremony, Tremble handed out the Legion Poster and Literary Competition awards to students at the school.

Winners in the Black and White Poster competition were: Gr. 4 – 1st Hannah Hawkins, 2nd Cooper Fleet; Gr. 5 – 1st Caitlin Doherty, 2nd Ben Saunders; Gr. 7 – 1st Jesse Brownson, 2nd Katie Idzik; Gr. 8 – 1st Ellis Zimmerman, 2nd Sean van den Eijnden.
Winners for the literary portion of the competition were: Gr. 6 – 1st T.J. Teselink, 2nd Paige Coffey; and Gr. 7 Katie Idzik.
Posters being sent on to the Zone competition were created by Jacob Saunders, Jabe Verbeek and Hannah Hawkins, as well as the literary composition by T.J. Teselink.
