McKennitt nominated for Grammy

Stratford based singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Loreena McKennitt has been nominated for a Grammy award.

One of a small group of Canadian artists on the nomination list, McKennitt is nominated in the New Age category for her album Troubadours On the Rhine. Other nominees for New Age Album of the Year are Omar Akram, Krishna Das, Michel Brant Demaria, Steve Halpern and Peter Kater.

Troubadours On the Rhine was recorded live off the floor in 2011 at a German radio station, SWR in Mainz, with two of her long-time musicians, Brian Hughes on guitar and Caroline Lavelle on cello.

“I’m a little surprised to find myself as a New Age nominee,” she said. “I’ve always seen my music in the ‘world’ category – but I think now, as the music business changes, categories seem less and less important. I’m very grateful to have this sort of recognition.”

This is the artist’s second Grammy nomination — she was nominated for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2007 for her best-selling CD, An Ancient Muse. At home, she has won two Juno Awards in the Best Roots/Traditional Album category, for The Visit (1992) and for The Mask And Mirror in 1994.

McKennitt is currently on tour in Quebec, following a run of more than 40 sold out concerts and festivals in Europe this summer.

The 55th Grammy awards will be handed out Feb. 10.
