Parishioners of the Arthur United Church celebrated 120 years during a special anniversary weekend, Nov. 3 and 4. The Torchmen Quartet presented a concert on Saturday evening, and a special church service was held Sunday morning.

The Torchmen performance was Saturday evening, followed by a short reception.

Torchmen members Sandy MacGregor, Jeff Tritton, Mike Moran and Jon Hisey entertained with lively gospel music interspersed with lots of joking around.

Moran spoke for the group and commented on the new murals across the road, on the side of the Sussman’s building. He asked if anyone present had served in the Armed Forces, then asked the man present to stand up and be recognized. The Torchmen followed that with a patriotic song, one he said the group doesn’t normally do because it is not upbeat enough. He said it was added to Saturday evening’s program because Remembrance Day was fast approaching.

The group performed favourites like “How Great Thou Art,” along with a number of other beautiful songs that showcased their talents as a quartet.

Each of the members was introduced –the four of them have more than 100 years of experience with the group.

Rev. Mark Cudney was guest speaker at the Sunday morning anniversary church service, which also featured special music by Selayna Hostrawser. She is the granddaughter of Doreen and Gus Hostrawser.

Gail Clarkson, the United Church Pastor said the parish will be moving forward together, following a great 120 years.
