Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece was both humbled and honoured to bestow a pair of Mount Forest citizens with medals, in honour of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

At a brief ceremony at the library in Arthur on Wednesday evening, Nov. 7, Mr. Pettapiece recognized Dr. Robert McFarlane and Mrs. Donna McFarlane of Mount Forest for their dedication of service and giving back to their community.

“There are so many people who deserve recognition for their achievements and contributions,” said Mr. Pettapiece. “Everyone who does a service to their community deserves a medal. I wish I had more awards.”

Dr. McFarlane was recognized for his 20 years of work with the Louise Marshall Hospital Foundation in Mount Forest and commitment to community health care. A respected dentist, Dr. McFarlane was lauded for his longtime service as a member of Mount Forest United Church and Mount Forest Kin family, as well as his willingness to volunteer for the benefit of the community.

Donna McFarlane was recognized for her extensive volunteer work, and career as a teacher in Mount Forest who inspired many students to give back to their community as well. Mrs. McFarlane has worked extensively with Free the Children, including humanitarian work in Kenya and spearheading a number of community initiatives.

The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a new commemorative medal given in honour of her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne, and in recognition of those who have made a difference in the service of others. Mr. Pettapiece called it an honour to meet last week’s recipients, and to present them with one of the 60,000 medals awarded across Canada.

“No matter what you do or where you end up in life, be of service to your community,” concluded Mr. Pettapiece. “That will be your reward.”
