I’m so excited! I just ordered this years chicks from Performance Poultry!
We’ve ordered birds that we would like to use for meat and some that we would like to use as layers. We have decided to stick with Rare and Heritage breeds because…..well…..we are Heritage Hollow!
Seriously though….Some of the breeds we are getting are extremely rare and, in fact, one of them (the Buckeye) is critically endangered. I plan on breeding the Buckeye and the Dorking for meat and also to sell the chicks to others that might want to raise them as layers or for meat. Besides, I am determined to become more self sufficient and eat locally and what better place than my own backyard. After doing millions of hours of research I have decided to start breeding these two breeds for the following reasons:
1. After watching Food Inc. I became DISCUSTED with the Rock X (Commercial bird you find in the grocery stores). I don’t want to raise something that can barely walk and lays in it’s own filth because it’s been engineered to go from chick to market weight in only 6 to 8 weeks. I won’t raise something that is well known to have heart attacks because they literally out grow their heart. It’s cruel, it’s inhumane and it’s GROSS.
2. Yes heritage breeds are slower growing and not ready for market until 16 to 18 weeks and they will cost me more in food but they are good foragers and they are both known to be exceptionally delicious. The best thing is (for the softy in me) they will scratch and play and enjoy the sunshine, grass and life. The will have a wonderfully spoiled life and they will only have “one bad day”.
**I hope to bring their meat to market next year (2012) once I’ve established my own flock. I hope others will appreciate the time and the care taken to bring such an historically rich meal to their table.**
3. I chose these two breeds because they are also good egg layers should the need arise. They are also known to be friendly and docile.
4. It makes me proud to know that I will be apart of saving these breeds. In the future I would love to supply chicks for others to breed. (All in good time -- gotta learn the ropes first)
